Apps in ChatGPT: Can Buyers Book You From a Chat?

OpenAI introduced apps in ChatGPT on October 6, 2025. What it means for discovery, booking and your website, and what a small operator should do about it this quarter.

Can a buyer book you without ever seeing your website?

Right now, only if you are Booking.com or Zillow. But the question stopped being silly on October 6, 2025, when OpenAI introduced apps inside ChatGPT. I do not think this changes your business this month. I do think it changes what your website is for, and that is worth thinking about before it is urgent.

What did OpenAI announce on October 6?

OpenAI described apps that appear inside a ChatGPT conversation. A user can invoke one by name, or ChatGPT can suggest one when it fits. The company's example was asking ChatGPT to make a playlist with Spotify, and surfacing Zillow when someone talks about buying a home.1

The details that matter for business owners:1

  • Launch partners: Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify and Zillow, available where their services operate, in English.
  • Availability: logged-in users on Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans outside the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
  • Apps SDK: in preview, built on the Model Context Protocol, with testing through Developer Mode.
  • What is still coming: app submissions for review and publication, plus details on how developers can monetize, "later this year."

OpenAI also says building with the SDK reaches over 800 million ChatGPT users. That is OpenAI's number, and it describes the audience, not how many of them will find or open any particular app.1

Where did the plumbing come from?

OpenAI built the Apps SDK on the Model Context Protocol, which Anthropic introduced in November 2024 as an open standard for connecting AI tools to the places data lives.3 I covered how MCP fits with its sibling in Agent2Agent and MCP: The Plumbing of the Agent Economy. That matters because open standards spread. A way of exposing your services that works for one assistant is more likely to work for others.

Can a small business get in today?

No, not as a published listing. The public submission process had not opened when OpenAI announced the SDK.1 If you are an operator with a coaching calendar or a telehealth intake form, this is a "watch and prepare" moment, not a "build this week" moment.

I would be suspicious of anyone selling you an app build right now. The platform rules, review process and money model are not even published.

Is this a threat to your website?

I do not think so. I think it raises the bar for what the website must contain.

Think about what an AI front door needs in order to recommend and book you. It needs to know what you sell, who it is for (the same logic behind optimizing for AI answers), what it costs, when you are available, and what happens after a yes. If that information is buried in a video, a PDF image or a paragraph of fog, a person can still figure it out. A machine will guess, or skip you.

Your website is becoming the source of truth for every AI front door.

What is Google doing in the same space?

Google announced in May that AI Mode was rolling out in the U.S. with no Labs sign-up required, and that its agentic capabilities would start with event tickets, restaurant reservations and local appointments, with partners including Ticketmaster, StubHub, Resy and Vagaro.2 The post does not say those were live on launch day, so read it as a direction.

Two big platforms pointing the same way is a signal. The assistant is moving from answering to acting. OpenAI's ChatGPT agent, launched in July, already asks for your approval before consequential actions like a purchase.4 The pattern is a person delegating the errand and approving the last step.

What would booking from a chat actually look like?

Nobody outside the launch partners can say yet, so this is my reasoning, not a forecast. The partners OpenAI named share a trait: each one has a clear catalog, clear prices and a transaction that can finish with a few structured inputs. Hotels by date. Homes by budget. Courses by topic.

Services that sell on trust and conversation, like coaching, clinics and consulting, are a different shape. A buyer rarely books a high-ticket program from a one-line answer. What a chat can plausibly do for you is the step before: introduce you, answer the first round of questions, and hand a warm buyer to your booking page. That makes your first impression a summary written by someone else, from the words you published.

The three things a summary will pull from your site

  • What you do and for whom, in one plain sentence near the top of the page.
  • How much it costs or what range, because a recommendation without a price is a recommendation nobody can act on.
  • Why you, which means proof that is specific, dated and attributable.

If any of those three are missing, the summary will fill in the blank with whatever else it can find. You may not like what that is.

Keep a human step where trust is bought

For anything high-ticket or regulated, assume the sale still closes in a conversation. Design for that: a clear way to book a real call, a prepared intake, and a first minute that does not waste the context the buyer already has. The chat gets you introduced. Your process gets you chosen.

  3. Booking pageThe buyer lands on your domain
  4. Real conversationTrust is bought here, and the sale closes

What should an operator do this quarter?

You do not need an app. You need to be easy to represent accurately.

  1. One clear page per offer. Name, who it is for, what is included, the price or price range, and the next step. No jargon.
  2. Plain booking rules. Hours, time zone, cancellation, what to prepare. Put them in text, not just inside a scheduler widget.
  3. Proof with dates. Reviews, results and case notes with real names or first names and real dates. Machines and people both trust specifics.
  4. A real FAQ. Write the ten questions a buyer asks before booking, and answer them in two sentences each.
  5. Test your booking as a stranger. Can someone complete it on a phone in under three minutes?
  6. Watch the platform. When submissions open, read the rules before you build.

What I am not saying

I am not saying chat will replace search, or that your next customer will arrive that way. I am saying the cost of being clear is small and the cost of being invisible to a new channel is not. Clean up the source of truth, keep your booking friction low and stay curious. Clear pages per offer are a big part of the sites and funnels I build for clients.

Do not build for a channel before it opens. Build the thing every channel will read.

Questions people ask

What are apps in ChatGPT?

Apps in ChatGPT are interactive apps that run inside a conversation. OpenAI introduced them on October 6, 2025 with launch partners including Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Expedia, Spotify and Zillow. Users can name an app in a prompt, or ChatGPT can suggest one.

Can my small business build an app in ChatGPT today?

Not as a public listing yet. OpenAI said the Apps SDK is in preview, that developers can test in Developer Mode, and that app submissions and monetization details would come later in the year.

What is the Apps SDK built on?

OpenAI says the Apps SDK is built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard Anthropic introduced in November 2024 to connect AI systems with data sources and tools.

Does this replace my website?

No. Chat is one more place a buyer might first meet you, but your website remains the place you hold your prices, proof and booking rules. Make that source of truth clear and current, because every AI front door reads from it.
